If flavor was the focus then I'd agree there are many better tasting hybrid varieties available. For Best Boy and 4th of July especially plus 4th has some name/seed purity issues. There are also more productive hybrids available.

So while I wouldn't rate any of them as a great tomato, they are ok. JMO

I have planted Bush Steak and 4th of July.

I like the first better. It kept fruiting til the end of season when it got Grey Mold.GM is common late in the season in our climate, not BS's fault.

Sey, you surprise me. I thought you were hooked on 4th of July. I actually planted a few more than the 18 plants I had last year because the college students really like them. I'll admit they aren't more than a week earlier than Big Beef for me but yield is consistent and good.

But if I were in the FL panhandle My main focus would be on soil borne diseases. If the variety didn't have a VFN label behind the name I would look for another choice.

As you just mentioned , 4th of July is not that early. So there are many beef steaks types that produce better than FOJ in my garden. Otherwise it was pretty good.It is not that I will not grow it again.
