Roses to Get

Hey all!!! :) Welcome to another gardening season!!! :)

I was just curious if there are any "MUST HAVE" roses this year?? I'm new to roses, I actually just started with them last year. As far as I'm concerned, they did well (I think) as they all have leaves on them. The Campfire ones had a lot of dead on them but after cutting them down today, they're looking better than they did when I got them last year. I figure they'll grow as much as they did last year.

Anyway, here's what I have.

Campfire (2)

Hansa (2)

Emily Carr (1)......I call her Miss Emily. ;)

Therese Bugnet (1)......I call her Miss Therese. ;)

This year I have already started filling out my collection by getting Candy Stripe, which is a hybrid Tea Rose. I've never had a hybrid Tea Rose before so I don't know how it will work out for me. I also got Morden Sunrise. Those will be planted this week.

So I was just wondering if anyone has any must haves that they want this year. :) Sorry this is so long. Heheheee!!!! ;)

Winnipeg Parks is my all time favourite for my zone. Large bright fuchsia pink tea like blooms, interesting red foliage, vigorous, repeat blooms, and some fragrance too which many of the newer varieties don't have much of.

Therese Bugnet is a great choice, not only are the blooms scented, her foliage and stems are unique.

Another favourite of mine is Snow Pavement, her clove-like fragrance is amazing and I like the soft hint of mauve.

I also love Cuthbert Grant, it has some similarities to Winnipeg Parks but the blooms are a much deeper red-purple, ruffled and velvety, and also scented.

If you are looking for something new, Oscar Peterson was recently added to the Canadian Artist series.

Walmart has roses for around 13 bucks right now, and Canadian Tire and Superstore for about 20 bucks. It's hard not to resist!

South Country Guy......Oh, sorry!!!! I guess I forgot to put my zone. Anyway, I'm in 2A, in Saskatchewan. I'm pretty limited in what I can plant here. I find that I can plant Zone 3 plants here without problems. I have a lot of must haves as well but some are just not suitable to plant here. :(

Prairie Northrose.........I actually got my Candy Stripe from Walmart and I snatched up the Morden Sunrise as quick as I saw it from Home Hardware. Hehehee!!! ;) Superstore just opened their garden center last week, I think, so I have yet to go there. Canadian Tire didn't have many plants last time I was there, so I need to go back to look. :)

I also LOVE the scented ones, not crazy about the ones that don't have smell to them. The scent is half the beauty of them. ;)

The Never Alone rose had me tempted since last year. It looks real nice and it's got a nice smell to it. I think I may get it this year just to satisfy the temptation. ;)

Well, sweety2002, I am newer to roses in Calgary (previously a zone 5'er) but I must say that my 2 year experience with John Davis has been nothing but positive! Its vigor, healthy and clean foliage, lovely pink flowers and relative lack of thorns have made me very happy so far!

I am very keen to see how my Alexander McKenzie and Hope for Humanity will do this year... :-)

Just as I thought that I would not buy any more roses as I don't have the space for it, well, I could not resist those healthy roses at Walmart and Home Depot as they were first unloaded from the truck! Oh yeah, they did look good then.... anyway, I got a Tropicana which is in a big pot now, and then I also just got a Henry Kelsey too! So far it is doing great and I just can't wait to see how he would climb up my trellis!

Now, my Double Delight experiment is so far going well - it survived the winter and now it is growing fairly well. No spectacular growth yet, but I guess it's still just mid May.... LOL

Sorry about being in Sask....... :-)

Make sure Morden Sunrise has the graft planted really deep as it is infamous for not being very hardy. Usually dies back to the ground here. I keep threatening to move mine from its prime spot as it black spots badly and the blooms shatter so fast but I love it and its fruity scent.

John Davis seems to be a winner almost everywhere, here included.

    Welcome to the Rose addiction!!

Double delight sounds wonderful but I doubt it would survive my 2b/3 zone. Would it be highjacking to ask about hardy scented roses?

I just thought of a hot new rose to enter the market, I saw it for sale at Golden Acre in Calgary this year, it's called Above and Beyond, it has apricot and cream blooms, and is supposed to be very vigorous. Here is a link to it: http://www.firsteditionsplants.com/the-plants/roses/above-and-beyond-rose

And some more photos on HelpMeFind.com (a rose database): https://www.helpmefind.com/rose/l.php?l=2.70752.1&tab=36

South Country Guy......Hehehehee, thanks!! ;) I am actually wanting to move from here to Vancouver Island or Salt Spring Island, somewhere around there. The climate is so much better there. :)

Thanks for the tip on Morden Sunrise. I haven't planted it yet since it has been pretty cool here lately and it actually snowed a couple nights ago. However, it's got a few buds already!! I can't wait to smell it. :)

Applemum........Not at all!! I wouldn't mind knowing about the hardy scented roses myself, now that you brought it up. ;)

Prairie Northrose......That's a gorgeous rose!! I wonder what it smells like!!

On another note, I satisfied my temptation today by getting Never Alone rose. It's a pretty big bush already with a LOT of buds on it!! It's got a full flower open and the fragrance is light but really nice!! :)

Applemum, Impossible to hijack a rose thread unless you start talking about grass!!!

Lots of rugosa's and alba's would fall into hardy scented. Let's not forget about gallicas, hybrid perpetual and spinosissima. Roseraie d'le hay comes to mind and is usually easy to find.

Keep in mind I am partial to old garden or antique roses. Forget that, all roses!

This thread enabled me into buying Therese Bugnet.

Cornhill Nursery's catalogue is great at describing scented hardy roses, "fff" or "ffff" are the varieties that are most scented: http://www.cornhillnursery.com/retail/roses/roses.html

The owner of Cornhill is the author of the book "Hardy Roses."

The varieties that have flowered for me and have strong fragrance include Snow Pavement, Scarlet Pavement, Therese Bugnet, Blanc de Double Coubert (really strong), Sir Thomas Lipton, and JP Connell. Moderate fragrance include Winnipeg Parks, Cuthbert Grant, Bill Reid, Morden Sunrise and Rugelda. No fragrance for me include Emily Carr, Champlain, Hunter, Hansaland and Frontenac.

SCG, Therese is absolutely charming, I love her soft green leaves and vibrant red stems. Lovely scent too.

I want to plant JP Connell this year. We had a beautiful one that came with the house. Unfortunately I killed it by moving it, and after a bit of research I'm almost certain it was that variety. I found a nice looking plant at a nursery but it was a little pricey, now I'm hoping that by some miracle I'll find a healthy one at Walmart for cheap.

i also saw one named Olds College that looked great. It was a peachy colour with tons of petals. I'm not planning to plant it, but I wish someone on my street would.

Violetjune, I got JP Connell at Canadian Tire for about 18 bucks last week. I love the hybrid tea scent and how the blooms fade from apricot to ivory. I have to find a spot to plant it. How big did your get?

The Old College Centennial rose does look great! I went to see it at the Olds College rose garden, the plant was very compact with shiny foliage. The blooms were very full and had a nice apricot mild scent too.

JP was at crappy tire here as well when I got Therese.

I am anxiously waiting for the spring flush since last year was so horrible on the roses.

Off to start training a few. Have a great day all.

Southcountry I love the gallicas and antique roses also! Unfortunately it seems they don't like my zoning. I had a Stanwell perpetual for about 3 years, it grew well but very straggly, maybe that is normal for it?. I also had a rose de rescht for two winters it bloomed but didn't grow much and a lovely Jenny Duval, it also lasted two winters.

That's great to hear JP Connell was at Canadian Tire. I didn't see it there, but I will look again. I'm not sure they had unpacked everything.

Prairie northrose, the one at my house was quite large, probably five to six feet tall. It was bushy but had a nice, upright form.

Thank you Violetjune, that is great to know JP Connell has the potential to get so big!

On further thought, it was probably more like five feet than six. It looked pretty well established until I got my hands on it. Now it is well-placed, well-pruned and dead, oh well.

There were none to be found at either Canadian Tire I visited, just one sad specimen at a Walmart. I will have to keep looking or just shell out for the slightly larger plant.

Applemum lots of the OGR's are of the hardiest roses. I can't speak from experience as my rose de Rescht is only 3 years old but I don't think it supposed to get more than 3'x3'

maybe I will have to do some more looking.

Look look at cornhill they have lots of hardy OGR's.

i am super excited this year as i have a few buds on roses I have never seen bloom! Erinnerung an Brod, Belle Amour, Mme. Legras de St. Germaine and Felecite et Perpetue all have at least one bud. Hoot!!!

    Thanks, will have a look!

On impulse I picked up a "Never Alone" rose but when I got home. as I suspected, there was no space to put it in the ground. Having one empty container available I potted it up.

Is this container large enough to successfully overwinter this rose (I would bring it inside the unheated garage).
