Thanks so much We are in the sierras. I agree that some of the rocks should go. I think we can make some planting pockets but I don't think paths would work. we are in a sismic area and need to keep the hill stabilized. There is also strict regs on any sediment run off. It is all new to me. Where we moved from, the perennials are annuals up here. The plants you suggested are great ideas.

From your image it is hard to know if the area near the home slopes up at the same angle as the rocks. Likely it does not, because the door would not be able to open. If it is, you will need an excavator to regrade the earth to level for some distance from the home, then look to build a retaining wall at the right edge of the image. This will allow for the front to be regraded so that the area now covered with rocks can be made parallel with the horizontal base of the home - you would be able to remove a triangle of earth and rock. Next, consult a landscape person who is familiar with the area for a more uniform plant material to hold the soil and to minimize the appearance of the slope. Substituting the many shapes that are brighter than the home with dark forms with indistinct edges will have the effect of making the home the center of attention - as it should be.

Wow! Would be beautiful but really tall retaining wall. The neighbors to the right have a wall going out all the way to the street which might present a problem. Something I would have to check and see if it is cost productive. Definitely need to get rid of some of the rock and Iam thinking of doing mounding type plants, flowering shrubs and evergreen mixed . Having the rocks just peak out. low maintenance and drought tolerant. We get heavy morning sun though to 2pm on that slope.
