Of course, grocery store tomatoes are hybrids so you really don't have a clue what you're going to get. They'll be tomatoes, but probably not "grocery store" tomatoes. (Which may be a good thing!)

well what I like to do is to buy some nice hybrid plum tomatoes and save the seeds in the house and plant them in the spring. that way I get a dozen plants to see how well they do. and in general they do just fine.

Look at it this way !You are going to get some tomatoes.

They cross 2 OP varieties to get a hybrids. Often those 2 OP varieties are decent themselves.

In the worst scenario you might get something that is the same as one of the OP parents. You might even like it better than the store hybrid.

All my volunteers I've grown out have been excellent. For some reason, most have been yellows with really nice citrus notes.

Loving all your comments! More volunteers have popped up. I am noticing some of the flowers are much bigger on thicker stems than some of the others. I never use cherry tomatoes, so doubt any of them are those, but I guess you just never know. this is exciting to watch! We have one plant we bought at HD and it's covered with tomatoes. I think it's Big Boy or something like that. Looking forward to the volunteers!

I FINALLY know what I've got! One plant has set a few fruits. By the shape I can tell it's a grocery store Roma Tomato. Long with a pointy end. I buy those a lot to use on pizzas and caprese! The other that has set fruit has to be a medium size red that they sell attached to their cluster, usually in some kind of bag. Great salad tomato. I'm going to watch them closely. Maybe shade them today. I can't let this heat wave stop them!
