ceiling advice

Looking to cover some painted over wallpaper on the ceiling with some kind of sheetrock or paneled ceiling. My contractor is recommending Luan with some trim to cover the seams and stained to match the oak bookcases, also a crown molding stained as well. My fear is that the room may be too dark. room is 28' by 14'. any other ideas?

Luann is NOT the way to go. It is wood and will expand and contract and the seams will crack.

Just use 1/4" thick drywall instead of luann. It's done all the time. However, the least expensive way to go is to have the wallpaper removed by a professional.

at least get an estimate for the removal...i'm expecting you'll be taking it off the walls too. no reason to spend to add a layer when you can remove the paper instead.

Not taking it off the walls, at least not yet. The walls are plaster (1880 house) and it would be a disaster. just trying to fix a bad paint job someone did to cover up a leak on the ceiling paper. I had thought sheetrock as well, may go back and ask to price that instead. do like the trim on the seams to give it some depth.

Don't go back to the contractor who recommended the luann..............that suggestion pretty much disqualifies him from doing the work.

Take the drapes TO THE CEILING. Make sure floor and table lamps are throwing light to the ceiling. Pot lighting lights the room, but still leaves a gloomy ceiling. Upgrade the fan to a style that doesn't look as though it's on the back porch.
