Cabinets in an 11ft kitchen

We have an 11ft ceiling and can't decide if we go all the way up to the ceiling with cabinets or not. Is it just preference or is there a design reason to go either way?

Just depends on how often you want to get out a ladder. I sometimes need a step stool to reach the top shelf of my 36-inch cabinets; will need it every time for the top of 42 inch cabinets, and that's with 8-foot ceilings! Three feet higher only if you have a collection of vases and plates (etc) that you want to display but basically never get down. Or similarly rare-occasion storage. And/or are really tall.

I might go with more cabinets than these guys, but I like the idea of painting the walls beyond the cabinets to match:

Another option is some combination of elaborate moldings and soffit, or taking up some of the height in the middle with a tray or coffered ceiling.

Cost is the primary reason. Are you willing to pay for a second set of kitchen cabinets that you rarely use? If cost isn't an issue, then do you want more storage or more wall space to display things?
