I'm fairly new to the gardening world and completely unexperienced when it comes to clematis. I have been thinking of adding some to the back of a shrub border in front of my house but I'm not sure if that is an appropriate location. The space is in full sun (8+ hours). It is about 8 feet long and 4 feet deep. There is a row of relatively short evergreen boxwood shrubs in front, so the bottom foot or so of the clematis would be in shade but the rest would be in sun all day. There is a pair of windows above this area that are probably 7 feet off the ground and I would not want to go beyond that height. I would really like to find something to add summer color above the small shrubs and it is very hard to find something that grows 6-8ft tall but not very wide! My plan would be to put up a large trellis a couple of inches from the house for the clematis to grow along.
Would this potentially be a good spot for some clematis or will the shrubs interfere? If so, are there any varieties that may be better for me to start with? I'm hoping for a large, vibrant pink or red flower. In looking at pictures online, I would say that "Ville De Lyon" matches exactly what I'm looking for though the description says it gets to be 10-12 high, so it may be too large for this space.
Any feedback, tips or suggestions would be greatly appreciated! For reference, I live in northern MA, zone 6a (but right on the border of 5b). Thank you!
