No they are primarily grown as just decorative plants and only poisonous if you eat them. But why use food production space for decorative plants? Not to mention the vines from them could easily take over the entire trug and then some. If you want to grow actual sweet potatoes to eat then grow one of the edible varieties. But they require a great deal of room.

As I was contemplating what to put in my trug, I thought adding the decorative vines would look pretty spilling over it... but, as you noted, I don't want them to take over. I'll stick to putting them in a pot or basket. Thank you, Dave.

I like to sow some fast-growing greens in my containers. The containers don't get raided by rabbits. By the time the slower growing plants are getting large and crowding out the sun, it's too hot for the greens anyway.
