Installing Crown Molding Around Stone Fireplace

My husband and I are installing crown molding in our family room. After viewing many pictures on Houzz, I have decided I would like the crown to extend completely around the fireplace, instead of ending at each side. My husband has installed crown molding before, but never on a surface as irregular as our stone fireplace. Any expert suggestions on how to accomplish this would be greatly appreciated.

Lots of examples of crown moulding on top of stone fireplaces on Houzz and it looks great. I would recommend using a substantial wooden moulding because the stone fireplace is a strong statement. At the top of the fireplace, you could fix a strip of wood which the crown could then be nailed into. I'm thinking a 2"x4" would work. You may have to add a moulding to the bottom edge afterwards. Caveat: I've not done this before and am theorizing here. I just recognize that you're not going to be able to nail the crown right into the stone, and the ceiling is not going to support this either. I would be very interested to see if a professional finish carpenter might have a recommendation for you.
