The only gray I see that might work is the sample right next to the cabinet. I think gray should be as close to the counter color as you can get.

Otherwise, go much darker with a true gray which compliments your counter. BM Stone Harbor and BM Dior Gray.

I am finding it so difficult to choose a colour for my kitchen. I don't really like too much colour. My ideal would be to change the kitchen but unfortunately funds won't allow that!

No, I wouldn't put wallpaper there. The heating element would spoil it.

gray is great in a kitchen, especially with gray finishes! Just go a few shades lighter than the counter, but tonally matched -- I think that might be a little lighter than your leftmost sample.
