Wrong paint used ....

Hello all,

I'm having a master bath remodeled and so far everything is going fine The GC and his subs have been very conciencious and the quality of the work seems top notch

Only real hiccup so far has been with paint I'd specified an oil based paint in semi for the trim and closets, primarily to match what's in the rest of the house. (Sw pro classic). The painters shot the trim and closets in a low sheen water based alkyd urethane

when I asked about this, GC said that this what they thought we meant as this is what everybody uses now when they mention "oil", real oil is going out, this is far superior, etc I have no reason to doubt them but just wanted to get you all's insight. The main thing that bums me is the lower sheen It's kinda eggshell which seems weird on trim especially in a bath

Contractors don't like to use oil as it is high VOC and they are exposed to it daily. I agree with them on that water based seems to be the future. BUT they got the sheen wrong so they should fix it.

Personally, I want what I want and don't care about what "everybody else" uses. I would be especially not happy about "accepting" a lower sheen than what I wanted and what was specified. If you asked for and specified semi-gloss, that is what you should get. IMO.

I just painted our kitchen cabinets. Ordered a oil based gloss. The fellow who mixed the paint picked two gallon cans off the shelf in the back. One turned out to be a water based version of the oil based I ordered. I did not even notice the difference until I washed the brush in paint thinner and the paint congealed. The other gallon(and a succeeding one were oil based. I know where I stopped and started with the oil after the water---still cannot tell the difference in the finish.

All they need to do is reshoot with the proper sheen. A decent alkyd paint job needs two coats anyway.

"water based alkyd urethane"?

I don't believe you will find water and alkyd in the ingredients on the same paint container. I would ask them to get the sheen right then leave well enough alone.

All paint makers have a water based alkyd, it's what's for dinner.

You should still get the semi gloss you want, no problem.

thanks for all the responses. To update everyone, apparently I said "oil based like the rest of our house" but didn't specifically use the words" semi gloss", which is what the rest of the house is clearly shot in. So, long story short they are going to re paint it.... on my dime. Not a huge deal but just a lesson to have every stinkin detail spelled out in writing.

Do you remember not saying semi-gloss or is that just their story? I would think they would have asked specifically about the sheen. Eggshell trim would have been unusual and doesn't wear well. Amazing how some people go about their work so loose and casual. I guess people wouldn't be so busy if there weren't so much rework.
