VERY ugly basement bathroom

Hi!

We are remodeling our entire basement including the bathroom. Our contractor said for only 1k more he would include the bathroom supplies.. vanity, tile, toilet, lights, etc. Or for 1k less he would provide just the rough materials.

But i don't want a boring bathroom, and I kind of want the control. Here is a picture of the hideous vanity. The right side has a small shower, we are going to make a glass enclosure.

Any design advice? I was thinking a vessel sink? behind where I am standing is the toilet. You walk in the toilet is on your right and the vanity/shower is straight ahead.

Am I a fool for not taking the 1k offer of including everything? The contractor did my master bath, and did an amazing job, but I picked out and payed for everything

Thoughts? What would you do? Any design ideas? I want something fun, since this is a basement bathroom.

You should not let your contractor do it. I see the word "control" and the word "fun" in your description, and those both say to me that you have a creative vision that is likely to be quite different from the inexpensive prefab finishes that your contractor will use for this space. Let him help you lay it out and suggest what sizes of fixtures you need, etc., and then go find the things you like.

As for style of sink, make yourself a new idea book with images that capture what you think of as a fun playful space. See if those are likely to fit with, say, the modern sleek look of a vanity with a vessel sink, or eclectic use of a furniture-style vanity, etc. Also keep in mind frequency of use -- do you have a family room down here, or is it just where somebody stops in when they're doing laundry, or is it for guests? How you should balance fun and practical will depend a bit on those factors.

Plus, you know, lots of fun options exist for tile in inexpensive lines, from cement-look gray to wood-look to patterned or plain and self-effacing. Pick your own stuff.

I agree. Builders grade is pretty bland. Don't spend money on something you don't like. maybe ask your contractor if there are any other sink options.

One-thousand for all of that. I'd tread lightly. Pick out what you want as you've done before. What about a pedestal sink in the space?

The problem is my design taste is very lavish, or maybe eclectic is a better word .. my mind starts wandering. I'm thinking about a small vanity with a natural stone vessel sink, like one of those sinks that look like it's been carved out of a rock.

Anyone know the best place to look for something like that?

Don't go for his offer. It sounds like you are not relocating things and you will not like the vanity he provides you with. Choose it all yourself. It does not need to be as nice as what you did for the master. I have read here on Houzz that when you want a vessel sink you need a lower vanity. Maybe someone can clarify that.

Listen to the advice if you want fun 1K is not going to do it with a contractor. It is going to be a big box store deal. Vessel sink look great but if you have kids they are a headache to keep clean. Water and soap splashes everywhere.
