a kitchen designer also makes sure that the cabinet dimensions are correct as ordered and that doors and drawers won't interfere with each other; a lot of little things. we do see dilemmas here of people who have done it on their own but the drawer next to the stove won't actually open as they planned it... so. it can be money well spent.

I should also add that I am getting the cabinets through IKEA and had them send out a professional who measured and set up where the cabinets need to go. I am really looking for someone who has more of an artists eye to help me pick stuff out so it looks more sophisticated.

I've done this type of consultation regarding colors/patterns/materials for kitchens. The amount of time is dependent on exactly how much help you need and how quickly you can make decisions. Try searching on Houzz for a decorator in your area who can visit your home and see the project in person. Ask if he or she is interested in consultation only and how much he or she would charge you. $250 would get you about 2-3 hours. Using a certified kitchen designer would probably be overkill since you already have IKEA taking responsibility for that part of the project.
