Streptocarpus Potting Day!

Today, a box with 36 varieties of streptocarpus arrived. Some with 1 plant in a bag but most with 3 to 5 (or more) young plants in each. A friend of mine has decided to down size her collection and wanted to send me her duplicates rather than throw them out. Only one variety among these I already had in my own collection. I pooped out after potting up 100 plants but I'll finish the rest of them tomorrow. The shipping bare rooted worked great. (As bare rooted as she could get them).

Now each plant has been separated, washed with dish soap lightly, patted dry, then potted up with a sprinkling of systematic insecticide granules, labeled, and sealed into fresh baggies. They will remain in quarantine for about 3 months, separate from the rest of my collection under observation.

It's a good thing I just put up a new big shelving unit!

Are you kidding? If they all survive - you will need 3 more stands...at least...and I bet some of them will turn to be real monsters...OK, buy 5 more stands!

Patty, I think you should list the plants (esp your dups) and offer them for shipping...that way we save you from buying more light carts...it's the least we can do.

Haha, guys, I'm working on going commercial. I've already been selling. I have closed down sales for the summer months and am working on expanding my propagation facilities. I am aiming for at least 10 4' shelving units as my immediate goal. I have 110 different hybrids of streptocarpus (around 700 baby streps in atm) as well as african violets, mini sinningia, orchids, and many other things.

OK - so you already have your greenhouse! Good Luck!

I would be interested in some of your streps or gesneriads for sale.

I have over 1000 orchids at the present time.

    My email is orchidnut73137@gmail.com

Hope to hear from you soon.

I'll drop you an email, Bill. Currently I have sold out everything I had for the spring.

Here's an update on the first photo I posted - now June, most of the streps are out of their bags and doing well on the new plant stand I set up a while back. Lots of other things shown here repotted too.

Here's the whole stand. This is just one of several lighted shelving units I have for propagation while others are more for display of my stock plants. I have also moved a ton of sinningias and episcias out onto my back deck to enjoy the summer heat.

Btw, not a single one of the streps I was sent died. All of them are thriving.

Hmm... Some people have brown fingers and toes to the point of... their lawns probably never have any dandelions...no Roundup - they just touch them - and they are scorched... deep roots included.

So - no matter how strong is your starter Strep and how well it is raised...

The Violet Showcase owner - who was running a store for 35 some years before retiring - told me - that his best customers were plant killers... he sold them same-o - same-o over and over again. Plant growers - you can only sell them this variety once...

Haha, I bet that's true! I sure have killed a ton of plants over the past 40+ years to learn what I know now and there's still so much to learn. I always find it interesting that there are so many different ways to make things work. What works great for me might not work for someone else. Location makes a difference too. My streps do NOT like Georgia heat so I had to install a separate air conditioner and humidifier just for them, but I can throw other gesneriads out into the heat and they thrive.

Yup - your Episcias do the same as in their native equatorial area - work as a ground cover!

I am amazed how creatively people actually manage to kill plants... Mainly by totally disregarding the requirements. But in various ways. You think - air, water, light, temperature and fertilizer... they think - this purple AV will really match the upholstery in that dark corner. Or - this ceramic pot is SOOO cute... who cares it doesn't have a drainage. My friend is on saving money - she turns the heat down in winter when she leaves until the you can see your breath when you get in. How much she saves - I do not know - she needs to turn furnace on full blast when she gets in. But she will bum me for 20 blooming named plants - and month later they are all in trash. For crying out loud - you just killed $200 worth of plants...and she comes back. I said no more. She is mad at me - but they are living things, not cut flowers.

Ouch! I cringe at the thought.
