Cut back the leaves as Nancy said. Water once very deeply and then no water for 1 month. The watering is too settle the soil around the roots as well as getting moisture deep down to encourage those roots to stretch down. This regimen works for fast draining soils as well as for heavy soil. Those rhizomes are storage tanks. Water too often and you invite rot. Soil needs to dry out between soakings.

This applies to bearded iris, not beardless.

Is the entire rhizome buried? It should have the top of it showing and getting some sun to it.

Planted a bit too deep. Very important to trim back foliage so plant does not have to support all that foliage and can focus on getting roots established.

Sandyslopes.. no the rhizome is not buried just a bad pic. I do have some soil lightly covering some of the rhizome..
