It is interesting you should ask this Katrina as I was wondering the same. My Whitney, now that it has been indoors for many months and not in the brightest light possible, has started growing taller and the leaves more slim. I attributed it to lower light. Then Russ mentioned in another post that many growers use a growth inhibiter to keep the plants smaller, but once grown own they attain their natural height. I wondered if that were the case with my Whitney.

According to Chihanian's book, Banded Nelsonii grows to the same height as trifasciata. It also says the centers and dark green and the borders 3/8" wide. It seems to me Whitney has wider borders. That is just personal observation. For all I know, Whitney could be growth inhibited Banded Nelsonii. Leaf cutting of BN revert to trifasciata, btw, according to the book. From you photo, it looks like BN is thicker and glossier than Whitney.

Interesting stuff there. I need to find that book. The more I learn, the more I want to know. These plants are fascinating. I'm so glad I stumbled upon them and decided to give em a try.

I first read about Banded Nelsonii in Hermine Stover's book, The Sansevieria Book, (first edition 1983) on page 46 under normal sized black plants. I was wondering why you can't find them.

Irina, your Nelsonii looks similar to Sansevieria Black Tiger, that I saw today in Hornbach (Stuttgart/Germany). Hornbach is something like HD in USA. Price 7 €. Maybe its just a synonym. By the way...very nice collection :)

Thank you guys! Yes, I've noticed a new name - Black Tiger - on e-bay. Almost sure I have the same specie. The problem is I don't trust that source, to be honest. I think these new variaties in most cases are just modified names. Like in the case with Whitney (original name from the USA) that became Diamond Flame in Holland.

That's exactly why Sans are so difficult to identify. Whitney is Diamond Flame, Eve is Silver Flame. At least Gold Flame is consistent!

So the difference is that Whitney is Futura size and Banded Nelsoni is trifasciata size. Plus the wider margin of Whitney. Chahinian says typical width on Banded Nelsoni is only 3/8ths of an inch.

Interesting, and a great question Katrina! I've never seen a Banded Nelsoni.

Banded nelsonii (if that's the name) sometimes has no margin and sometimes this snake stripe appears in the middle of a leaf. It may be interrupted.

Whitney/Diamond Flame is a perfect futura for me.

As far as I know, Eve is a mirrow transformaton of Whitney and even now (I enjoy it for two years only) is higher and narrower than the latter but wider and lowerer than S.tr. Black Coral. The edge band is also irregular.

Silver Flame is unknow to me, I've seen it once in some Dutch website.
