Is it hard to keep them all watered with this dry weather we've had? And are those all plastic or resin pots, or do you haul heavy ceramic ones around? Either way, the results of your work look perfect, congrats!

I really appreciate all the positive feedback... the garden (with limited space) is tucked away at the edge of a forested ravine in a quiet, relatively private setting, and I've been able to create something out of nothing really. As I've previously stated in several posts, having so many pots is not my ideal scenario, though it does hold some positives.

Faye and Teuth, quite frankly the watering can be a chore - especially when there are prolonged bouts of dry weather (the past two years in particular). To make the task easier, I've now placed many of the pots in trays that gather the water running through. The biggest difficulty (and pain), is reaching some of the pots on the bank at the back (this necessitates moving some of the containers out of the way so that I can make my way through with a hose). Later on in the season, I take the short cut of simply spraying from the bottom. In the past, I haven't had to water all that much until July. Even then, when late August arrives, I have less watering, since the garden receives greater amounts of shade. However, last year was quite labour intensive, with record dry spells lasting from March to late August. This year, too, is following the same trend thus far. Overall, I try to water every third day or so at the height of summer, thought when the temps climb towards the 30's, every second day is sometimes necessary. Faye, the grass you are asking about is black mondo - the dusky light may be responsible for the different hue. As regards the containers Teuth, no ceramic for me - just lightweight plastic pots! During the winter they are stored on stackable shelving units (undercover) - much tidier! These are simple to assemble and take apart, and are easy to store for the rest of the year.

WILDerness... I don't rearrange the pots all season long, though I do make alterations as new additions arrive. For example, I have about 10 new hostas on order from Glenn (Hosta Choice), and later in the season when they arrive, I'll move some things around and make adjustments. Equally, to accommodate differences in shade and light received as the months progress, I usually relocate some plants.

Anyhow, once more thanks to all for the encouragement and compliments - it's nice to be able to share with other hosta and gardening enthusiasts.

That one's Tequila Sunrise... got it from Glenn last fall. I like the red pets, the upright stance and the ruffled margins. It starts out quite a bright yellow at the start of the season and then greens up later on. Glenn took a division of his display plant for me which was much appreciated.

From my limited experience with the plant, it's certainly one that I'd recommend!

That would be Atlantis - the closest hosta that I can grow to Montana A. (one of my favourites that hasn't fared well in my backyard!) Atlantis shares some similar characteristics - & there are some great examples on the forum of plants much larger and more spectacular than mine... check them out!

It's a wonderful plant that grows to quite a size - here's a couple of wet and dry contrasting pictures.

Thanks, BC for identifying it. I just purchased a Montana last year which is doing really well, but when it comes right down to it, I think I prefer Atlantis. The grass is always greener, right?!

BC, this is the most amazing hosta pot garden I came upon (my thanks to sherry girl who mentioned it)! I'm planting hostas for around 5 years and for my garden it works also best if I put them in pots.

Beautiful. What medium do you plant in? I have been using miracle grow garden soil and I just got a 8 new hostas that were planted in fine bark. What is the best? I have had rotted roots in both mediums.

Seeing these pics, I'm thinking that the vase shaped hostas almost always look better in pots than in the ground... thank you for sharing. I'm sure that this will inspire others.

BC, how long does it take you to bring them all inside? And do you wait until the cold weather freezes the pots solid then bring them inside? Do you water them at all in the winter, especially if it's milder than usual as they thaw out?

Simply gorgeous! I can't imagine the time that it takes to water them--we have to water for an hour or so each night when it's dry--we have lots of hostas in the ground and 35 or so large pots of annuals, ferns, etc. I can't imagine how long it takes to water each pot. Such a wonderful picturesque assortment of plants--I absolutely love the grasses. Everything looks so lush and healthy! Thanks for the pictures.

Adjectives are all used up. I'm gobsmacked, as Brits would say. Most stunningly beautiful placements and specimens I've ever seen, Your artistic eye is genius. My eyes got bigger and bigger with every vignette.
