dianthus bed advise

I need some advise as how to achieve my goal i have a garden bed that currently has hollyhocks and lupines and peony's in it which i plan to relocate all to another location. Ideally what i'd love to create is a dianthus bed 4 rows all staggered for height, preferably id like to start everything from seed as i really love watching the progression and satisfaction that i planted everything.

The first row I'd love to go with a classic white, but afterwards i'm unsure. My house is a baked clay red. So light pinks probably wouldn't look to good.

I'm looking for suggestions on heights and colors and types for each row please. The tallest flower can probably go about 5 foot that being the last and final row but it doesn't have to of course. Really would love everything to be a perennial if possible.

Any suggestions and help would be so wonderful. Thank you! Id love to start this project this yr knowing that it's getting quite late and i'll probably not get any blooms until next yr.

Hi, I adore dianthus, my absolute favorite is the Super Trooper orange variety, not sure how to help you with the staggering, but I know there are so many colors of dianthus I had to throw this one in for you, it's a gorgeous orange, reminds me of dreamsicle ice cream!

I would really like to try that dianthus louann. Have you had it long? Is it growing well and I wonder if it will over-winter ok and come back in the Spring.

I'm in zone 7, all of my dianthus do well, literally. They have come back every year and spread well. I recently bought a super trooper at Lowes, on the "dead rack" for 50 cents. I put it right in the ground and watered it, and hey, it's blooming now :) I try to add different colors that I see each year, my dad had several of these, and they remind me of him. I'd love to see your dianthus display when you've finished it.

Quite frankly, I have never heard of a 5 foot dianthus. If you like, I can send you seed of siberian blue.

Are you sure you want all dianthus? The reason I'm asking is that in my experience they are gorgeous bloomers, long-lasting blooms, but eventually they end and mine tend to bloom at the same time. I like the staggered idea. Just an idea:

Row 6: Back Row New England Aster-blooms in the fall, but makes a nice green backdrop for the flowers in front. Light purple blooms.

Row 5: Amazon Neon Purple and Rose Magic Dianthus. Blooms have amazing bright colors. The Amazon Rose Dianthus starts white, then changes to pink, then changes again to a deep rose color. The Amazon Dianthus will bloom continuously from early spring to fall when they are deadheaded or used as cut flowers. When used as cut flowers the flowers are long-lasting. Amazon Dianthus will get anywhere from 18″ to 36″ with very strong stalks.

Row 4: Dianthus Fire Witch or Pinks. Fire Witch has a different texture of foliage--a nice offset

Row 3: Dianthus Itsaul White

Row 2: Dianthus Super Trooper Orange.

Row 1: Phlox subulata white or purple

I also like the black and white blooming varieties although I don't have any. Heidi
