Pond Troubleshooting

last modified: 10 years ago

I have recently bought a property with a large man made 25ft deep rock bottom pond that is approx 75ft wide estimated to be about 300000 gallons. The pond has a steep edge and is clay lined. We have installed a solar powered aerator, are encouraging more surrounding plant life, have plans for a floating garden, trying to minimize sediment run off and even applied pond dye to try and minimize algae growth until we can get some more substantial plant life around the edges. We would really like to be able to safely swim in it.

Lately we have noticed a reddish hue around the edges that we think may be algae? Pollen? Run off? Pine needle goo? Its thin slimey and odourless, and there is also a clear thin layer that sits on top of half the surface area of the pond farthest from the aerator.

I've attached some photos - any friendly advice to help us get this pond looking beautiful and healthy would be greatly appreciated !
