Hi Everyone,

Well, I gave in and ordered a few bulbs from Komoriya again, the first order this season!! They came today and all look to be in very good condition.

Among them was h. petiolatum which I only wanted because I was so in love with their picture. I realize that this is a variety of h. straitum and there are many different variants but as I said, I loved this butterfly like shaped flower and if mine looks like theirs when it blooms, I will be happy. Here is their picture:

So my question is about the method of forming bulblets for this species. I have never seen such a cute button shaped offset on the side of a bulb before. I realize that this must be h. petiolatum's way of reproducing but I was just amazed. How does it form roots if it is 3/4 of the way up from the bottom of the bulb and how does it separate itself from the mother? The side with the button has a slight trough I guess you could call it from the basal plate to the offset.

On the exact opposite side there is a bulge that I assume will form the same type of offset but there is currently no connection on the outside from the basal plate. I realize the bulb knows what its doing, but I just found it so interesting because I've never seen this before!

My question is, when I plant this do I plant these protrusions below the soil line or above. I really don't want to cover them as I want to watch to see what they do!
