Runaway Kerrii

Hi all, this Kerrii loop stayed a "loop" for almost 2 years. Last year I forgot about it and look what it did ! Does this thing stop ? The peduncles are all blooming from bottom to top !

And away.

Is this common ? Thanks for looking.

Wow Marco! Your Kerrii is beautiful and is growing like crazy. I need to move to FL to help my Hoyas thrive.

Hoping to get my greenhouse going soon. Contractor's been contacted now I just have to pick one out.

Beautiful. I have seen pictures of some impressive kerrii grown in the south, and this is extra impressive.

It is gorgeous, Marco! Kerrii is another one I will eventually get. I have a couple of kerrii hybrids, but no staight kerrii!

    Hey Marco,

No they don't stop, if you give Kerriis free run, stand back!

How wonderful, thanks for sharing w/ us!! The amount of peduncles & the amount of wall space you've got. I'm sure I'm not the only one jealous (in a friendly way of course).

I never tire of their wonderful large leaves, so handsome even when not blooming.

I grow indoors in NYC. Here's the one I grow Hydro in Leca stones.

But couple of years ago, this one got really woody & I actually tied a knot in the stems.

No problem, it kept right on going. This Hoya is programmed to GROW!

Great show, thanks for the beauty!

Very cool. I am on the hunt for some solid Kerri. Let me know if you would be interested in trading a cutting of your plant the next time you trip it for some neon Pothos or cane begonia. Thanks

Thank you everyone ! It produced all those peduncles last year during fall and winter. I left it out all winter as it will snap if it I move it. The painters tape is all that is keeping it upright. 7 peduncles are in bloom with the last 4 opening today.

When we get rainy or too humid, aerial roots attach to the walls. When the 3 long shoots are woody enough for viable cuttings, for me in FL, probably by August, l will take cuttings and offer them to you all. It's been hot and steamy for over a month now, it's wonderful for Hoyas but I am an old New England farm boy. A long break from steam heat would be nice. This plant is very hardy and grew even when it was in the 40's. Danielle, when I offer cuttings of it, please remind me that you asked. I have a lousy memory and am dyslexic as well. I would hate to forget a promise or request and cause hurt feelings.

Lena, I bought this loop after seeing yours on a post a few years ago, I remember one vine reaching for a skylight, too. After that, I bought this one ! Thanks (I think).

    Thank you all again, Marco

FYI, Marco. It'll be much easier for you to take the cuttings BEFORE the stems get woody, they thicken & get harder to cut.

Also, be ready w/ a spray bottle of water as this Hoya bleeds so much white sap it looks like Elmer's Glue. A spray of water at both cut ends will slow the sap down & then stop it. Just be prepared, it can be a messy operation.

Marco, nice to know you feel seeing one of my Kerriis inspired you to get this. What do you mean pls. about "loop"?

Lena, you mentioned how you used rubber bands and such to bend the thick stems in a loop. The next day, I saw one at my local Garden Center that was wrapped 4 times around a thick, galvanized loop that went into the pot and comes out the bottom drainage holes. The metal is thick and is machine bent somehow to stick out the bottom holes like the feet of the Greek letter Omega. The main plant comes out of the soil like a T and vines go out each direction. There is no extreme bends or breaks, so he took good care making it. I just let it go wild !

Thanks for the advise on taking cuttings of it. I will keep the spray bottle handy. One problem is that it only made peduncles, very few leaves are on those long shoots. Would a cutting 6 or so inches long be viable with maybe one leaf and 3 peduncles ?

Thanks for your input, Lena. You were the inspiration for that Kerrii, 100%.

Hi Danielle. If you're looking for a kerrii, I have a very nice sized start I'm willing to sell. If interested, e-mail me through this site and I'll send you a photo.

Lena, I love your photo. And not just because of the plants, but because that hanging fruit basket thing is giving me ideas for my constant quest to defy the laws of reason and physics to increase my growing space without having to move.

Thanks Lena ! Kim, I just tossed one of those baskets out ! Stupid me ! Like you, I an constantly on the lookout for the "best/perfect" plant hanger/holder I can find.

What is the yellow bloomer to the right in the original picture? Blashernaezii? Both are very pretty!

I think that yellow one is marco's special lacunosa (which might not be lacunosa...cv. Sunrise could also be it)

Aurora, you are correct, it's that my crazy cv. Sunrise. Thank you !

It's been a long time since I have seen you here postpunkgirl ! Nice to hear from you !

Thank you, Marco, it's great to be back! After some tumultuous events in my life (which was directly related to my plant neglect) I feel inspired and stronger than ever this spring!

I love yellow blooms. The only yellow blooming Hoya I have is blashernaezii.

What a beauty. It's funny because in my world I look at my kerrii and think "when will it ever start?" I bought an all green one off of ebay recently and it is the strangest looking thing. It was obviously hard pruned and only has 5 leaves left and was way overpotted. I just down-potted it and I'm hoping for the best. :-0 Thanks for showing what mine could someday be.

Gvargo, give it a good fertilizer and plenty of light and it will take off! I have a Kerrii that is about 7 years old! It has bloomed a few times and after seeing this beautiful one growing outside, I'm ready to put mine outside this summer. Marco thanks for sharing!!

Thanks, Teisa, I recently put it outside with some of my other tiny Hoya plants. I'm a new collector so most of mine are newly rooted cuttings but I got lucky on ebay recently and got a blooming dasyantha. I try to console myself that when all my little Hoyas grow up, I'm going to be a very busy gardener.

    Cheers, Gloria
