Since no one has jumped in . . . is there a reason you are using fishing line rather than wire? I would think wire would give the clematis a better grip than the smoothness of fishing line, and would last longer as well. You need not worry about hot metal since many of my clems cling to metal obelisks, some of which are black and some of which are rusty.

I tried fishing line when I first started with clematis. It is too fine for them to grip. I went to my local feed store (Tractor Supply) and bought some wire fencing that I use plastic zip ties to hold up the fencing. Works great and has for several years!

I prefer fishing line>wire for visibility reasons. kentstar - was your line strung vertically as well as horizontally? I'm asking because from other posts it seems as others have had success with clematis...

I use fishing lines on my fan trellis. I make the trellis out of TREX decking material. They last a long time. The trellis I have are about 10 years old and i think will last another 25 years. No rot or any other problems. The fishing lines are also ten years old. I bought it from Outdoor world in Columbia, MD.
