Is my sans beyond saving?

Hi all, I posted the same on the houseplants forum, but maybe I'll get some expert response here.

Much to my horror, I discovered some what-appeared-to-be a couple of rotted
leaves this morning. I pulled them off, but here is what is left of the
plant.

I had it in orchid mix along with a ton of perlite (probably
60%) since I can't find the gritty mix ingredients just yet, but
basically, I didn't water it the whole winter, and maybe watered it once
a month or 1.5 months in warm weather for fear of rot. It started out in a rather peat heavy mix, which is why I switched to the bark/perlite combo.

It is in a low light situation and was in a 2 or 3 gallon plastic pot (couldn't find a clay one big enough).
This is the second one I may have killed.

Can I salvage this plant, or toss it, and should I give up on sans altogether and
stick with other tropical plants in my low-light place? I was thinking of just getting another large
aspidistra and be done with it. I can't master the sans indoors.

I bought a large one on clearance that looked exactly like that. I repotted in fresh soil in a 12 in. Clay pot and it got rainwater about a week or so afterward. Its doing fine now so there's hope. I think you'll be fine. :-)

Yes! Thank you Katrina. Good to know there is hope yet!. I re-potted tonight, removing all the old soil, and put it in a 12 inch clay pot like you described. I made a mix using some clay pebbles from my hydroponics experiment, a small amount of left-over cactus mix, and a LOT of perlite. We'll see how this works out!

Sorry, but no, the clay balls are a bad idea.

They'll hold water because they're porous & absorbent & likely rot your plant. Defeating the whole point of a fast draining mix to then add components to HOLD water, sorry no.

Also the difference in size btwn the clay balls vs. other components will make for uneven absorption & pockets of wet. Again, ill advised.
