Adenium seeds for root stock

Hi guys,

I saw a grafted adenium the other day and am now in trouble. I must try it. So forgive me my curious newbie questions.

For those who have grafted adeniums, do you buy your root stock or grow it from seed (and then wait... a very long time before they grow large enough to graft). Considering the high failure rate I've heard of in grafting, I can see that growing 20 seeds may be cheaper than buying 20 mature plants (as long as you're cool with waiting awhile for them to grow up). That said, if you buy mature root stock, where do you get them from? And if you grow your root stock from seed, is there a specific type of adenium seed you should get or is any seed fine? I'm aware that those eBay seeds from hybrid adeniums are unreliable, but is it fine for root stock?

I couldn't really find this info online. So sorry in advance if these are dumb questions!

If you have Adeniums already to take scions from to graft. I would try and find some cheap adeniums at one of the Big Box stores or such and use those as Root Stock. If you are just starting out and want to experiment. You can leave the cut stalk of the Root Stock a little longer (Flat Grafts my preference) and if the first attempt does not take. Then you can slice off a bit more and try another one.

Growing you own rootstock would work as well, just may have to wait for a couple years for it to get large enough to use. Unless you live in a climate where they grow very fast.

I've seen some bald, sorry-looking, dehydrated adeniums with nice sized caudex (but check for rot) at Home Depot for ~ $15. I would try to get the store manager to lower the price before even considering it, but it's an option.

Please post when / if you go through with it. We'd love to join you in the experience.

I've grafted maples and conifers - quite a few. But never adenium. However if I were to graft them I wouldn't do it the way most growers do. I would probably wedge or cleft graft depending on what the understock was shaped like

Todd, grafting adenium is fun. If you fail, you can cut it down and try again.
