Building and maintaing reddish looking raised beds

last modified: 10 years ago

I do gardening and grow vegetables using "earth raised" beds, but I would like to use wooden raised beds. There are different reasons why I want to have them, but more so for aesthetic reasons.

I would like the color of the raised beds to match the color of my wooden patio more or less (at least the exterior part). I believe that the patio is made of untreated cedar, but it has been colored to look like a reddish/orange cedar. We have to paint it every year to preserve the wood.

I would like the color of the beds to look like this (like Western red cedar):

I don't want the color to change a few years later. The wood should last for at least 10 years. It shouldn't be a too costly project. It shouldn't leach dangerous chemicals, but as long as they are safe for growing vegetables, it's fine.

What are my options? I have very limited knowledge about wood, quality, type, etc.
