Peaches.... you're hardcore!

I put in a pf-24c last year and didn't suffer a bit of die back. Its planted right behind my Italian plums those had a bit of tip die back but the pf had none. I did cover with white material just to keep sun off . It flowered and had a few peaches until we got a really cold night. I think there might be a few still hanging buy looked cold damaged.

I do have a few peaches this year and will keep you guys updated through this thread hopefully one day it can be like Konrads epic threads he starts that last a decade and still going :)

ive also learned that my nectarines small fruits are hardy like plums when frost hit them early only loose a few. But the peaches die off easily like apricots . It's weird because nectarines are not as hardy or said to be as hardy as peaches but I think they maybe even more or just depending on variety ,I can't really say much as I'm not that experienced at keeping these things alive long lol.

Perhaps the difference is in the texture...nectarines are more solid.

Nectarine appears to have survived calgarys winter we just had. This is second winter it's survived. This year we had a very cold winter. The peaches seem to have survived also. More photos to follow this spring :)

Hail knocked off all the fruits last year . There was one fruit I got that I was able to eat . Small attractive bright orange peach that was very ripe when I picked it . peaches will require hail protection here

There was a couple nectarines that I let grow on the tree that finished but were damaged badly and I never ate them only saved the seeds

Beautiful day in se Calgary today. This peach tree survived a second consecutive winter in the ground without winter kill. Starting to leaf out . We had a very cold long winter this year in Calgary .

You can see was freshly sprayed with copper :)

What varieties did you get Konrad ?

I grafted Veteran peach last year onto 2 Capilano seedlings...on the farm and boxed it up with leaves...one completely died down, the other alive and pushes out now on the lower buds.

I wintered a Madison Peach, by tying the branches down, covered with hay and a tarp. It had a bit of winterkill on the branch ends that had less hay depth coverage. It's first winter and had 1 bloom. I wintered Veteran in a pot in the unheated barn. It wintered very well, so added dwarf pf24c to my 'potted' orchard this spring.

potted is easy just lay them in a spot the snow doesn't melt and cover with a bag to prevent moisture damage .

Konrad perhaps they were not that hardy of capilano seedlings. I've grafted a few to some Riley seedlings also but I think that Riley tree is more hardy than capilano as it's survived hundreds of chinooks and drastic temp changes

The one surviving bud grew just a little... struggling! Any crop this year Matt/Ubro?

There was a lot of fruit hanging on my empress that didn't turn out. They pollinated and grew a bit I should have thinned them stayed like size or marbles for over a month . Now all I got is one peach hanging lol . My other peach trees grew very well i assume next year my pf-24c will produce fruit has a lot of spurs and buds

Sorry I am late to the threads this fall, haying takes up lots of time and we just finished yesterday. My empress peach did not bloom this spring and seems to be suffering from what I think is shot hole? and some neglect. I did bud graft it to prunus americana and out of 4 I did get one take. That is not saying much because all of my plum and apple buds last year that took in the summer 99% did not make the winter. So we will see. Summer budding, for me, is not as successful as spring scion grafting so I gave it up this year.

Same here...I did the first time summer budding last year, most I lost by voles and rabbits and the rest didn't grow...zero % success rate lol. Gave up this year also.

Well this year was not so great. Got one single fruit off the dwarf peach. I lost my nectarine tree I had for a few years I think the rootstock was not hardy. We had a cold winter and Iate spring. Our pf-24c grew like a champ this year and for sure will be loaded next year if we have a repeat of this last season we just had here.

This is a difficult climate for peaches and nectarine. I will keep this thread going until I fail and throw the towel in.

Just reviving this thread for spring. I took my empress peach into the house a few weeks ago. It has spent the winter stored in my chicken house, I figure if I have to keep the hens warm I might as well plunk my potted fruit in there as well. The temperature does occasionally get below freezing but not by much.

The tree is a sad little specimen, I had to severely cut it back last summer because of my neglect, but it is sprouting well and did produce two flower buds which I removed.

Hopefully everyone’s peaches did alright over this winter! I’m curious how Matt’s PF-24C turned out.

@Matt If you want to trade I also have some peach scions. I’d like to try your PF 24C

I will not know for a few months as the ground here in my yard still has 2-3ft of snow cover

Grafts from peach to plum I’ve already discovered graft incompadability all grafts of peaches to plums are burnt to a crisp . There might be a few not dead on my apricots. I still have a few potted I winter outside and in the ground that are looking good that I’m able to snip healthy wood off.

Did you cover your peaches or have them done exposed?

Just checking in, as I'm also in Z3 and dreaming of peaches! Any updates on this past winters' survival?

I'd be interested in seeds and/or scions if you have any later this year!
