The current issue of Fine Gardening magazine, August 2016, has a very good article about how one couple in the northwest has controlled the critters that would invade their rural garden. One problem they have not resolved, yet, is their dogs stealing strawberries from the garden.

Too funny! I thought my dog was weird for picking out the ripe blackberries and eating them!

While free ranging, my chickens will pluck only the ripe fruit off of a cherry tomato that they have access to and won't touch the green fruit. Later in the season when most of the ripe fruit is higher up on the plant they will just stand under the plant and stare up until I pick a few for them.

My terriers seem to find the ripe berries and carrots before I recognize them. Oh, well. I just figured that was their commission for keeping the rabbits and voles at bay,
