Our Thomas Affleck has mostly Anthracnose which looks similar to Blackspot...But no big deal because TA still has a lot of leaves left... I only get pi**ed when rose bushes lose a lot of leaves....And I give slack if its near the end of the season...(lol)... Most of our roses are doing great no spray and have done really well this year in all areas so I'm a happy camper! lol...Just have to make some fine tuned adjustments here and there to further improve on things... :-) A gardners work is never done and we learn something new everyday... :-)

Thomas Affleck starting to bloom again... TA is still actually setting roots since I moved him twice in 2015. TA is still getting taller & wider at this point. Still hanging on to most of its foilage in spite of some Anthracnose disease. So all in all TA still looks real good here in Sept.!

Jim, I just found this thread and am admiring your photos of Thomas Affleck. I am looking for a small to medium size bushy floribunda or shrub with blooms the color of Zephirine Drouhin. On helpmefind there are some photos where the color looks pretty close. Would you describe the color of Thomas Affleck as a clear medium pink, or does it have dusky or reddish tones most of the time? Thanks for your help!

blank_generation, bloom starts out dark pink on the reddish side then lightens alittle to a different shade of pink. I am awful at describing colors...lol

Our TA bush is still growing... Others in colder climates have had TA grow to 5'ft high x 3+' ft so not exactly small in size...

THIS IS SOMEONE ELSE's PIC of TA but I want this to happen here someday....lol... TA is cane hardy (winter) to the tips here so I lose little to no plant height so maybe its possible someday...lol

Thomas Affleck producing some darker blooms and they are staying darker much longer at this time of year...

Thomas Affleck winding down for the season... TA lost some leaves to Anthracnose and alittle blackspot but overall the bush still looks good here in October...:-)

Put the finishing touches on Thomas Affleck and our other roses today... Applied some homemade yard waste compost ...Will apply more in the Spring...We got our first frost last night...

The foliage looks great!

Here is Thomas Affleck Nov 1st... He did drop about 25%- 30% of his leaves throughout the second half of October but not a biggie to me since he did fairly well the other months of the season...( Mostly had Anthracnose disease with some BS...)

Thomas Affleck: Nov 1st

Thomas Affleck made it through the winter with no dieback...But I did prune TA back a bit anyhow to see how he responds. Also pruned out twiggy growth...TA has a nice rounder appearance at this point...

TA is starting to load up with flower buds at this point in time...

The first 4 blooms were deformed...Weather related & some thrip damage...

The bush is close to 3ft by 3ft at this point in time...

We finally got some actual sunlight today as in no clouds or rain....:-) So blooms are opening....

Sadly, it's not resistant to powdery mildew in So Cal. :(

But I will post this bush shot I just took to show otherwise TA is doing fine...

"It came from below"!!!

Appears a groundhog took out the roots of our Thomas Affleck...While cutting grass the other day Thomas Affleck suddenly toppled over! TA is gone!

I just went outside a few minutes ago and that beasty that I mentioned a while back. The ground hog was sitting in the yard. Dang Jim that was one beautiful rose.

A few Groundhogs have been around here off & on for many years and they never caused us damage until now...

Jim- How terrible. Your Thomas Affleck was so lovely. Is it at all salvageable? I was able to save one DA Wedgewood Rose, one Darcy Bussels and an Earth Angel that had just enough roots left to start growing again. I potted the salvaged roots and added some Mycorrhizal and a small amount of fertilizer and the roots are starting to produce top growth. Wedgewood Rose looks really good and has recently been replanted surrounded by her seashell moat. Could it be vole damage? They are vile. I'm slowly replanting all my roses surrounded by seashells including bottom, sides and across the top. After the first hard frost I'm also going to pile shells up against the canes. I recently lost a coneflower to voles and a hosta. They even ate both of my blueberry bushes. I plan on planting everything surrounded by shells in the future if this does indeed work. I guess I'll find out next spring.

Jim what a bummer! Are you sure it was the groundhog or did voles sneak in? Hope you can salvage it. Gorgeous rose!

You know what I really hate. This was a great saga for a rose and it wasn't supposed to end this way. I have followed this from the beginning as have others. Its like a movie that you have been watching then suddenly the character that you like the most dies or it ends without an ending.

I soaked this little Fiji rose in a bucket of water for awhile then planted it in TA former location... Little Fiji has not grown much nor bloomed because of rose Midge this year...Hopefully Fiji grows in this locale as well as TA did...

Are you planting with underground cages like you mentioned in another post?
