Adding your zone

My zone info disappeared with the switch to Houzz, and I found it very difficult to add it to my profile. It would be nice if it could be easy to add our zone when signing on.

You have to go to "your Houzz" then "edit profile" and click on "advanced settings" on the left.

If you live in the US, you can find your zone by clicking on the link.

For those of us who live in Canada, the link takes us to the Cdn zone info, which (I believe) is different from the US hardiness chart, so not all that specific for comparisons when participating in an American forum.

Actually, please don't just tell us your zone. Please tell us city/state or general locale. For summer growing conditions, the USDA hardiness zone (which basically tells you how survivable your winter is) isn't that meaningful.

Location is much more helpful than zone. While zone info provides more info than many claim and is more helpful than including nothing - which most seem to do - location is more specific and more helpful. Plus it is easier to enter.

Very good suggestions. Every bit is information relating to your growing condition /climate can be helpful to the reader when you have a question and also it can help you get better help.

Although USDA zones are for winter hardiness, but there exists high co-relations wit regard to when the warm crop season starts and probably how long a growing (frost free) season you have . For example I can tell that for zone 4 gardener season will arrive much later than the zone 7 gardeners. And also zone 7 gardeners will have longer growing/harvesting window of tine than zone 4ers.

Another useful info is Heat Zone. As you can see on Dave's, Dan's and my profile. Very interesting. Just compare my USDA zone 7b (almost 8 ) to Dave's 6b-7a. His Heat zone is 8 (HZ8) my Heat zone is 1 (HZ1). What does it mean ?

It is a measure of number of the days during the season that highs reach and/or exceed 86 F.

Heat Zone 1 >>>> 0 to 1 day(MINE)

...

Heat Zone 4 >>>> 15 to 30 days

Heat Zone 5 >>>> 31 to 45 days

...

Heat Zone 8 >>>> 91 to 120 days. (Dave's )

So just by looking at my USDA zone (7b) you will probably have a wrong estimation as what kind of summer we have .

Then there is a "sunset" zoning too . I think mine is 2 or 3. I am gardening in refrigerator hahaha :-) That was just for laughs.

Well I've said this many times, but I'll say it again. I used to garden in the Pacific NW in zone 8b. I'm now in Texas in zone 8b. It gets just as cold in the winter there as it does here, but the summers are VIOLENTLY different, and the first and last frost dates are as well. Months different. Vegetable gardening strategy is completely different here than it was there. It took me years to get acclimatized. Same USDA zone. So if you just tell me you're in 8b and growing tomatoes, I don't have a clue what you're up against.
