The amount of additional support will depend on the roof design, type of sod/ green roofing, and the structure used. We were able to use trusses for this roof, but they had to be designed to support a greater weight and were spaced closer together than typical. Normally we would design a roof to support 15 pounds per square foot dead load (weight of the structure itself) plus 48 pounds per square foot live load (snow, in this case). This particular sod roof needed 6"-7" of soil plus extra protection for the membrane roofing, so it pushed the dead load to 100 pounds per square foot, plus the snow load.
