you could plant them in pots, and then bury the pot and all and dig them up - they will be contained in the pot - next season. I do this with canna bulbs each year … put them in a pot and bury the pot. Makes them easier to dig in the fall without breaking the roots. remember, transplanting sets things back, so why have them create roots, disturb them by transplanting and make them form new roots. Or, just plant them in the ground.

You don't have to transplant by doing each bulb, but you could transplant the entire potting mix contents of the pot into the ground. That way, there will be the least amount of disturbance.

However, your idea is fine. With the potting mix, it should be easy and soft enough to dig slightly and get the plant. But be aware that depending on how much soil there is, the plant might be adjusting to life above ground, and then you might bury it deep again outside. So try to keep it around the same level you would have it outside.
