New home, new garden in Austin

I am a first time homeowner and just moved from Los Angeles to Austin. I have a part of my yard that slopes down to an easement and seems to collect water. It's hot and zone 8 here. Other than this area its dry. What can I plant that can withstand the heat but will thrive in the mud?
