Good news! You don't have to wait! If you want to put in a patio, you first need to remove existing sod/debris to a 12" depth to prevent weed growth. Then haul in 3/4" crushed stone for a 10-12" base and compact it to prevent movement. Then you can go ahead and put in a stone patio. We like to use bluestone for our patios. Good luck!

MUCH EASIER solution: Paver Base Panels

My son and I used them when we put down my new walkway. They make it so you won't need to dig deeply, and put in HEAVY crushed stone.

You can use them on a temporary basis, they're very inexpensive and weigh almost nothing. I'm pretty sure you'd be able to reuse them when you put down your permanent patio - if you ever feel the need to change what you start with. You can use any kind of paver over them. I don't know about poured concrete, though.
