There's a bit of furniture there, but you don't have a lot of little clutter -- knick knacks and trinkets, which to my mind give any room a sense of 19th century Victorian over-do. From a commonsense perspective I would ask -- do people sit on all the pieces? If so, then the furniture has a purpose, which is to encourage people to be together and talk, something we can't have enough of in this society.

Yes, too many pieces.

--Remove one of the blue chairs.

--Get a round coffee table in glass and wood then pull the chairs in a bit to make a cozy conversation arrangement about 18" from the table.

--Sofa pillows should be in blue, cream, yellow.

--Find a more modern rug in cream, blue, and gold (or whatever the colors of your walls are.)

Coffee table would help bring the area together, and would also mute the impact of the busy rug, if you don't replace it. Agree that the amount of furniture depends on your seating needs. If you regularly need to seat this many, certainly keep as is. If not, you might want to reduce. But I wouldn't blindly reduce the number of chairs in the name of some decorating rule, as function should come first.

My sense is that the blue chairs are the non-contributing design element. The two chairs that match the couch should be placed opposite the couch. Further, it seems that there is enough room to pull the couch away from the wall, in any case try it. If it feels okay then, shop for a carpet or have wall to wall carpet cut and bound on the edges to make a rug upon which all the three pieces would fit without having the rear legs off the carpet. The fact will be to open the flow of the room since one may pass through the seat and around on both sides.

You're welcome, and good luck to you, nashanaelliott.
