The ripple effect! Slightly OT...

We just had a utility sink put in the basement, along with several outlets. Demo for the kitchen starts on Monday, so we're now setting up a temp kitchen downstairs.

Now that it's all really starting, I'm itching to tackle the rest of the house! I know that for my sanity, I should wait until the kitchen is done. Buuuuut... I couldn't resist doing this today:

I just wanted to peek and see how the wood looked beneath the carpet, to see how much work we'd have to do when we were ready to remove the runner...and it looked GREAT, so I pulled up a little more... and then more... And this is how far I got after an hour. Now I have to get back to my paid job, so the rest will have to wait until later. I don't know if I'll be able to surprise my husband with this after all. I have from 4-7pm to finish!

We're also going to replace all the upstairs carpet with hardwood, build boxes to go around the new A/C ducts in the closets, and then redo the closet, paint the whole house, especially the drab, depressing blah-cream trim and doors, and remodel the master bath... The list is growing!

ETA: I also want to remove wallpaper from one small bedroom, the main hallway bath (top half only, thankfully), and the half bath.

Haha! You work at home, too! I find myself distracted at times (case in point, having gardenweb up on my home computer with my work computer right next to it!), when I should be working. Those stairs look great! I can see why you didn't want to stop. But I would advise you to take a break in between big remodeling projects. I'm so glad we did!

Work? Oh darn. Better get back to it.

The rest came up super fast! Now... I hope my husband still wanted to get rid of it!!!

Oh no, turns out he changed his mind about wanting to get rid of it. He needs to tell me these things!!

Oops. Well I think it looks much better.

Haha! Well, the important thing is whether YOU wanted to get rid of it.

I agree with cpartist and romy! :-) And who has to clean those stairs? It'll be way easier to clean it without the carpet runner.

Think of the dust mites that are no longer hiding on the stairs!

You people are funny about working at home and husbands. My husband and I routinely fall of the same page. Annoying isn't it? You might tell your husband that the carpet would have taken a beating from the remodel dust anyway. Ask me how I know.

    I think it looks terrific!

One word of caution for your beautiful stairs: be careful, they'll be slippery!! We did the exact same thing several years ago, except ours was full carpet, not a runner. We refinished and they are beautiful. But I can't count the number of times the dog fell down the stairs, until she learned to take them slowly. *knocks wood* I have never fallen, but I am extremely careful, especially when carrying anything.

You're going to have a whole new house before you're done!

    It looks so much better!!!

Thanks, all! Our last house had bare stairs, and we never found them slippery in the 14 years we were there. :)

We have cats now, so ALL the carpet needs to go! My FIL is extremely allergic and can barely visit us anymore. He had to get an inhaler just for staying here.

One of my favorite things in the world is tearing up carpet - anywhere - to reveal nice wood underneath. Looks beautiful - much better than the cat-hair catcher, I mean carpet runner!

"We discussed it briefly and apparently she took that as permission.

Oh, pippie...wallpaper. I'm going on 15 years of mission creep here. I've managed to work my way up and down and around the interior of this house, painting every wall/ceiling surface at least once. Removing all the original builder-grade wallpaper was the worst of chores (picture extension ladder, 10' kitchen ceilings, lots of DIF, and tweezers -- dang builders glued the paper right onto the sheetrock in most places!). Finally got to the last room: our master bath. Stripped the wallpaper four years ago, and there it sits.

Looks great, pippie!! That will be the last stage of my updates and it's going to have to wait a year or two until I save up. I'm quite sure my stairs do not look like that underneath! I'm simply going to do the re-tread kits as they are solidly built. It does seem that before you're finished the one thing you need to do you're moving on to the next!

He's coming around! It did do the trick -- he's now motivated to start on the other projects. We have to paint the risers now that they're completely visible. I want to paint the hall and trim sooner rather than later, so painting the risers means we paint all the trim. The house will look 1,000x better with brighter trim!

It even made me come around to something he really dislikes -- the cheaply done knotty pine paneling in the family room. It was one of the things I liked most in the house, but it's badly done, dark, and dreary. The room will look better without it. But I'll keep enjoying the coziness while it's still there.

The kicker is that my hand has been swollen and sore ever since. I've had to miss two weightlifting sessions because I can't close my hand! So here I was, thankful that I was finally strong enough to pull out all those staples, and now I am incapacitated. Doesn't bode well for future DIY! I don't want to mess with my workouts again... And I couldn't even slice my bread for breakfast this morning.

Honestly... This wallpaper with the faux 3D look HAS to go!!

OP here. It took a few years, but we finally painted the front hallway and stair risers, and removed the horrible bathroom 3D-look wallpaper in the above post. We're moving, that's why! But it sure looks beautiful now!

It sure DOES look beautiful -- nicely done! What shade of green is the bathroom? And the wall leading up the stairs? Love them both!
