Mirror above the fireplace?

Hi everyone
I'm looking to replace the temporary small frames above our fireplace for something more appealing! As you can see, there is no mantle so not much space to actually put anything in there other than hanging - I also rather not put a mantle (bigger project and not ready for any other small or big remodeling anytime soon!!!)
I think that a big rectangular mirror would give some dimension to the space and make it look nicer. Questions are?
1 - how big of a mirror? Should I shoot for something as wide as the fireplace and as tall as the crow molding? Something smaller or in between?
2- should be opt for a black thin frame for more of a contemporary look or maybe a black+wood frame or even wood only that would match the look of the room?

Putting a mirror above the mantel might make your guests uncomfortable watching themselves while they're eating. I would put a large mirror above the console, and artwork above the mantel.

Consider adding a mantle to the fireplace it looks incomplete , looking at your chandelier I would get a round shaped mirror or even a clock .

I have a fireplace...no mantel and I did that deliberately because I found the most amazing piece. 37" high x 34"wide. Centered over the fireplace box, there is 12" on each side to the corner of the fireplace itself.

What I did have my builder do was to surround the stone with trim which is 5" wide. Finishes the edges nicely.

Builder's gas fireplaces esp. seem to have no mantel. Boxy art, canvas, would look nice without.

A mirror is one of the least appealing choices for over the mantel. It's cold looking and doesn't add depth since it will mostly reflect the ceiling.

Art is more usually more interesting.
