There's really not much of a way to identify those types of moth pupae from each other. Do you recall what kinds of caterpillars you've had to deal with in the past?

FWIW, any soil pupae that I find in my gardens are tossed in the direction of the birds that are smart enough to follow me around.

I think I have my answer. There are enough tomato plants nearby, that this is very likely a tomato hornworm pupa.

Do your pupae have that little hook on the front? It didn't show up in your picture, if so. That's an essential feature for ID purposes.

I was thinking more in terms of cutworms, armyworms, and many others.

I don't think they're big enough to be hornworms. You just KNOW when you have one of those!

If you still have it, rear it out and you can then post an image of the adult moth.

To do so, put it in a clear container with a "breathable" lid such as a piece of paper towel held in place with a rubber band. Set it on the counter or elsewhere where you will see it daily, but not in the sun.

After the moth emerges, put the container in the freezer overnight to kill the moth; remove the moth, take a picture to post on this thread.
