There are Lighting Designers in many areas. I don't know where you are located. The lighting designers may work in a lighting showroom or be an independent. I think it is a great idea to work with one. They will look at your floor plans, discuss all your available options. They do a great job of creating a layered lighting effect. This allows you to have focused lighting where you need it.

Our builder sent us to Ferguson's to work up a lighting plan. We worked with a lighting designer AKA a Salesperson and they sent our builder and electrician a lighting plan for both interior and exterior lights. They were great to work with although we are not purchasing all of our lighting from them because they had the top notch quality and some items were really expensive.

I recommend LUMENS.com. They have great prices and helpful customer service. Our contractor also told us the quantity of recessed lights to get. We then picked our own : 1) kitchen island pendants 2) light fixture over the kitchen table 3) light over dining room table 4) floor lamp in living room, 5) pendants in master bath, 6) bar light in vanity and 7) bar light in daughter's room plus a fun fixture. Definitely look online to see what you like. We went very modern.
