Hard to say from those closeup photos. A shot of the whole plant might help.

Yes, very hard to tell from the pictures but it looks like a runner and probably an Arundinaria or Semiarundinaria. Post more pictures if you can.

Those are better, but still hard to tell. My guess is that it could be one of the smaller bambusas, which would be a clumping type.

Is there a better photo I can take which will help? Close up?

Unfortunately, there about 1200 bamboo species, and quite a few look somewhat similar to yours...at least in photos. (In addition, if you are in the UK, that could be a species that isn't available in the U.S.)

Let me suggest that you visit the site bambooweb.info, where numerous photos have been posted of probably every bamboo you would find available at a nursery (and then some). In addition, they have a forum specifically devoted to bamboo identification.

I think you might have to be a bit careful with that one as I believe it's Phyllostachys bissettii [David Bissett's Bamboo]... which although marketed as a clumper, isn't one I would trust in my own garden. It's often sold cheaply and is a common bamboo sold by garden centres and suchlike.
Bissett's bamboo
..however, there is a possibility it could be Fargesia 'rufa' [aka Arundinaria murielae 'rufa']... or one of the other Fargesia's like mureliae 'Jumbo'...

I have a 'rufa' and it does have plum red shoots turning to green. It's a clumper and does not run although spreads quite a bit from the crown. These are generally more expensive to buy though.

Here it is in my garden in a pot. If I had to place a bet, I would go with Bissett's... as it's a lot cheaper and more commonplace... see how it develops before you plant it out would be my advice.

Fargesia 'rufa'..

..actually I might correct myself and go with one of the Fargesia's after all, as I've just realised Bissett's bamboo culms are all green and yours does have those plum red culms, like mine..

I know what it is!!
