The brown dead spiky branches are sprigs of dead pyracantha, which are sharp and thorny enough to discourage the neighbourhood cats from using my freshly-dug borders as their personal kitty-litter trays. "They don't like it up 'em, Mr Mainwaring!" (Private British Joke understood mainly by the over-40's....)

I plan to use the rue as a moth-deterrent, and the Evening primrose as a general tonic, balm, and restorative.
