Before the Rains

Since today's forecast was for rain, followed by showers, followed by severe thunderstorms, I went out yesterday and took some pictures before everything turned into rain shredded mush.

Frontenac, with Quadra in back

Gloire de Guilan

Juno with the Explorers in the back

Oooh, lovely, and such good-looking plants, too. The only variety of these I have seen out here is 'Trier', at the UC Berkeley Botanical Garden.

Lovely photos! Out of the roses you listed I only have 2 Quadra in my garden, and I just planted them 2 weeks ago for climbing on trees.

Well, the rain is on its way. At about 6:15pm here, following a few minutes of scattered raindrops, the sky opened up and it poured rather hard. As is the case this time of year along the east coast, it fizzled to a drizzle within a few further minutes, then intensified slightly to a steady light rain. I expect it to pass by completely in another hour or so, making its way north.

Oh, and beautiful pics. You grow your roses the way I like to grow mine -- big and draping.

    :-)

They are all lovely, but I was really taken by the charm of Trier (a new one to me).

This may sound stupid, but when I saw the title I literally choked up. I suppose you have to have been through a long drought to understand that. I really like Gloire de Guilan and Juno is also very pretty. I can take the hybrid musks or leave them because they don't do well in my heat. The other two at least have the charm of the exotic for me.

OMG, beautiful! I also love the big and draping. I also love the colors and the healthy dark green foliage.

Wow, MG! Beautiful photos of your beautiful hardy roses - truly inspirational for anyone growing roses in zone 5 who views photos of lush roses dripping blooms in warm zones with envy.

Cool roses! Does Frontenac have much fragrance?

Yes, I do like big roses :-)

Trier has been a difficult rose for me to grow. There have been years the foliage has been flaming chartreuse, so it is amazing how dark green the leaves currently are. It lives on a diet of sulfur and chelated iron, but it has been several years since it was last dosed.

I don't think Frontenac has much fragrance. This time of year there is so much going on out there it isn't an issue. Darlow's Enigma has started, and that sends fragrance all over the place. There is also a large mass of dianthus that smells rather like rugosas.

Yesterday, we had to get a prom dress home from the alteration place through the raindrops. It was pouring on the way there, pouring on the way back, but it stopped for a few minutes when the dress was going from the store to the car.

Your roses are- as always- a sight for sore eyes. There is something magical about the lush green growth of summer in cooler climates. I guess because it doesn't stay long enough to get taken for granted.

It's good to hear that the rain gods recognize the importance of the prom dress.

We are also getting rain now, but I think this is in advance of Tropical Storm Colin. I'd like to think these early cyclones don't necessarily portend a worse-than-usual Hurricane season, but I seem to recall that La Niña years often coincide with more and/or worse named storms.

    Thanks for sharing your photos,

    Virginia

Hmmm, I seem to recall some critical comments from you on 'Juno's gardenworthiness in your zone, but she sure looks good here. Wonderful roses, beautiful garden.

No, Juno isn't particularly gardenworthy. Too much of a show rose diva. There are years it barely blooms, and even in a good year like this one, it will have a small fraction of the blooms of Frontenac. I could strip the whole thing and have one big vase for the dining room.

I understand. 'Juno' is stupendous for me: no better flowers anywhere. §But not that many gardeners have room (literally) for a rose that's once blooming and yet doesn't take serious cold.

    Thank you for these!

Frontenac is so very beautiful. And the green lushness of your garden does, as Lynn mentioned earlier here, invite the onlooker to step into your garden. I am envious of this. Diane
