New Freezer

I've had my new freezer for a week today and I love it. Already got pork chops, roasts, smoked sausage and chicken in it in meal sized portions. There were some really good sales on meat this past week. The ground finally dried out enough to get the garden planted and I'm looking forward to down the road getting some veggies in the freezer as well. The only hitch was my FoodSaver died after 18 years so I had to go out and buy a new one. Yes, I've had very good luck with my appliances both big and small.

So which brand did you settle on? If I recall you were going for upright? That's my next goal if one of these chests finally bite the dust. One is 25 years old so keep expecting it to hex me this year.

And 18 years on a Foodsaver? That's got to be a record!! How you doing otherwise? Heading into a week of mid-nineties here so trying to baby the garden along but got the pickled beets done and all the broccoli in the freezer. Have been pigging out on salads and green onions. Good luck with the garden.

Yes, what did you end up buying? And what size? When I thought I'd upgrade to new energy efficient, I dropped down in size from 23 cu ft to 18 and I could really use a little more space. I've had a turkey or ham temporarily in the garage refrigerators freezer more than once. I'm sorry about your Foodsaver but I think you got your money's worth from yours. I hope you found a replacement at a good price.

Dave, I think some of these older freezers are almost indestructible, yours could have some years left. The 23 cu ft upright Kelvinator I left in the basement when we moved was 40 yrs old and still keeping steady reliable 0F. I probably should have bought it with me instead of having it convey with the other appliances. DH however remembered having to take off the back door to the porch, the door to the basement, AND the door on the freezer to get it downstairs to begin with, so it stayed.

I've had my new upright for about a year now. It is great but be careful about size. It is huge. More than i need really but it does fill up after fall harvest. We had to take two doors to the home off hinges, the the freezer door had to come off, then the freezer lower hinge. (all went back easily but we are handy and have the proper tools.)

The delivery boys were great and would have put it right in its chosen spot but could not do all that we needed to do.

    Measure carefully, : )

So glad to hear you are keeping busy but don't overdo it. I posted on another thread that my biggest challenge to gardening was age and energy levels while most were listing bugs and weather. Sure wish i had the energy of even 5 years back.

Sounds like a real good deal on the kenmore but like morz says this one old GE may outlive me. What I wouldn't give for an upright! This digging through the chest freezers is hard on the old back. ;-)

You're right, Dave. Age and energy levels are a challenge. I'm doing pretty good at pacing myself. Actually, I do a little bit at a time and then come in the house to rejuvenate with some cold water. I still have a good bit to be planted, but I'm not going to jeopardize my health by rushing. Tomorrow is supposed to be in the nineties. My niece is coming down to help me clean out the motorhome so I can put it up for sale. I'm wondering if I can talk her into helping me plant the remaining ten tomato plants, squash and cucumbers instead. It sure would help.

I chose the upright 40 years ago because I'm short and knew I'd have trouble getting to everything in a chest style. Heck, it hurts trying to get everything out of my washer. Maybe I ought to start producing a line of "petite" appliances for we short ones. Regardless, I am very happy with the Kenmore and how easy it is on the back.

We had bought a small chest freezer for upstairs in our walk-in area then scored an older upright that went to the basement. We try to keep beef and chicken in the one downstairs due to the large amount of burger and various cuts and keep our pork in the one upstairs. The fridge freezer is for convenience foods and grocery items. Absolutely love the upright, hands down the better option. I need to defrost every one of them right now, we plan to butcher our steer next month and just got our pigs for this season. Ugh.

That being said, I agree about age (or at least mobility) having a lot to do with what we hope to accomplish in the garden. I notice that I don't do the full-day marathon like I used to, the price is too high at the end of the day. I try to pace myself and hate that when I get home from work and try to do a little something, I hear/feel my back which is already on its last bit. I'm pretty sure I'll garden until I just can't, the benefits outweigh anything, therapy and movement and satisfaction. I'm very active, I work a 12-13 hr day but it burns me sometimes that I'm just too tired or back-sore that I can't do the things I want when I get home, yet gardening is definitely a decompression for me.
