There are more dead branches that can't be seen behind the live ones. I also wondered if the light green spots on the leaves were healthy. When I went to take a picture of the trunk, I noticed cracks in the bark, which could be borers. There are a big problem here.

As for the variety, do they all get as bright red in the fall as the images I see online for the Alatas type? I don't think mine got that red. From the images I found, I thought the light green leaves of the "Manhattan" variety looked similar.

No, Molly, those aren't the wings. Those are the spent flowers and embryonic fruit. The wings are corky excrescences along the older stems.

Your shrub is definitely not 'Manhattan.' The leaves and leaf arrangement are entirely different.

To be honest with you E alatus is an invasive species in much of the US and most people would advise you to get rid of it and plant something more worthwhile and less damaging to the environment.

I'd get rid of it now before you get to that part of the yard if it were mine. They tend to seed around in many areas, and it isn't ornamental now.
