You did not say what type of hydrangea it is. If it is a compact plant and you can find a good spot where it gets morning sun only and your son & you have no issues over taking care of it, it should be doable. How wide is it currently and type of hydrangea is it? Once it goes dormant, you need to find a temporary spot where you can place it.

To be honest I don't know which hydrangea it is, I'm not very familiar with the plant, I just got lucky with this one, have babied it for years, and don't want to see it die. Is there a site you'd recommend where I can see the different types? Right now it is approximately 4 foot wide and full of blue blooms that turn purple, then pink.

I believe you can get cutting with great success. Here is a link. www.hydrangeashydrangeas.com/propagation.htm. I would take the plant up, if it will die from neglect. I would make sure to do it at the right time, as it will no doubt resent a pot after being in the ground.Good luck, it sounds so lovely.

It is a H. macrophylla, aka as a mophead. At worst, it may get 5-6' high and similarly or less in width. Keeping the blooms blue in a pot will require that you amend the potting soil or buy potting soil for acidic plants that has aluminum.
