Kitchen Layout Assistance Needed

I have been looking at our ugly kitchen for so long and have been working to come up with a plan that will meet our needs but haven't been successful yet. We have lots of space to work with but the space is a bit narrow.

We want a functional space that is warm and contemporary. We are thinking of doubling the size of the 36" window. The walkway between the closet and opposite wall serves as the most used entrance to our house since it leads to the garage, laundry area and powder room (all jammed into a small space).

We are thinking about using a modern shaker cabinet (not sure of finish yet), a stand-alone range, french door fridge, bottom freezer fridge and traditional dishwasher. All are stainless steel. We want a chimney hood (if the budget allows) and a built-in look microwave (not above the range). The current plumbing is under the window with the range on the 94: wall and the fridge on the 144" wall.

We are looking at mid-range cabinets (dovetail drawers, plywood shelves and boxes, soft close everything) and granite (Alaska White, Bianco Antico, or Lennon) or Quartz (Cambria Brittanica). Our flooring will be Brazilian Teak (Cumaru).

Do you also need seating at a table in here?

Is your backyard beyond the double hung window and the bay? Where is the door to your backyard?

We would rather have seating at a counter/island than adding a table. Right now we have a table and it doesn't function well as it leaves quite a bit of unusable space heading toward the Family Room.

The backyard is viewable out the bay window so the window must stay. It is 26" from the ground and the ceiling height is 8'.

We have two doors to the backyard--one in the Family Room and one adjacent to the powder room.

If you look in the bottom left-hand corner of my drawing, you will see that there is "68 1/2" to door." Tha is a french door that leads to the backyard. The other door would be in the upper left corner perpendicular to the powder room door.

    Thank you.

I think you'll need to change the bay window; it calls for a table and prevents the counter or an appliance from making good use of the space.

Removing the bay window is not an option. First of all, it overlooks our backyard and pretty view. Secondly, that is a $3500 expense we are not willing to incur.

We have a giant bay window in our kitchen looking out to the backyard. I love it. But we have no choice but to move it because we are doing an extension on that wall. It has been a big challenging figuring out where to re-use that window! We are now looking at trying to use it in the master (also part of the extension).

So I get the difficulty. But it does limit the options for your kitchen. It's a lot of space to give up. But the views and light can make a space. I would try to remember though that if you can switch things around (are there smaller windows in the family room you could swap?) or use the window elsewhere, you could still have a window in that spot just one that allows for a counter below.

But it I get the expense of those kinds of structural changes and it may not be worth it to you.
