Layout Question re: Range placement

Please ignore the wall cabinets - still a work in progress. My main dilemma is where to put the range. Are there compelling reasons why either placement is better than the other? I like the sleek look of the range along the wall with the frig but I think the space is going to allow only for 15" pantry cabinets once I get the spacing reviewed. If it was along that frig wall, there is a chance I could opt to add a real exhaust up through the master bedroom closet. Code does not require it. There is also a gas water heater on the other side of that wall which opens the possibility of adding a gas line. I feel like the workflow would be better with the range along the back corner wall and out of the way. Then, I could have bigger pantries and use the space beside the frig as a prep area. Our current layout is so horrible that either of these would be a huge improvement but I'd like to take the time to get it as good as possible. Door to the rear of the kitchen will be a barn door that will mostly be open, leading to an office/homework/computer area. Thank you for your ideas - I have learned a lot from reading through other people's dilemmas! (Third photo is a duplicate - can't see how to delete it.)

If you want us to comment from an educated position, do an overhead plan with measurements. It's too hard to determine how much space etc you have to work with by showing just an angled 3d version.

OK, thank you. I am working on getting a better/true plan with IKD so I'll have something for a better look at what my other options might be. It was the stove placement alone that I was hoping to decide on for the initial plan and then look at revisions from there. If there was a strong reason why one or the other was better, I was going to focus on getting a competent drawing made of that option, rather than do both.

Just print some graph paper and draw it out to scale. Nothing fancy needed.

A walkway should not bisect the path between a prep sink and a range. It's a safety issue.

Additionally, I think the NKBA recommends less than 9 feet between the center front of a range and the center front of the sink. Again, safety. Imagine hauling a large boiling pot across the width of the kitchen.

So. Generally speaking, your second layout is better than the first.

I agree. Option 2 is more functional. But I wouldn't do a microwave hood. Inadequate venting, and safety hazard reaching over a hot stove to get to microwave.

Your kitchen looks very similar to sweetsarahbeth's. She used IKEA. If you google " gardenweb sweetsarahbeth kitchen" it should pop up.

I agree about the microwave. I like to put them separate and next to the fridge because most (at least in my house) microwaved stuff comes from the fridge/freezer. Perhaps a high cabinet for microwave next to the fridge would be best in your space.
