There are things that have to be changed in this room, (like it needs drapes) and maybe the paint color changed, but something seems off to me with the chandelier? Or is it okay?

I love it-it looks very inviting and comfy to hang out in. I would go with a drum shade light instead of the chandy (that's just my taste) and consider a pop on the floor with an area rug under the ottoman.

I do have a rug I can put there. The only reason I put a chandelier in there is that the rest of the house has a lot of french neoclassic/empire pieces in it. (From previous owner), that type of artwork, paintings, etc. It's been a pain trying to decorate it. I do like the idea of a drum shade.

Sounds like the shandy fits in with your decor. I love the pillows, especially the fuzzy ones!

I think the red pillows do relate to the room, because I see pops of red here and there, which ties it in. The chandy sort of mimics the scroll piece on the fireplace. It looks fine. If you selected pieces for your bookcase that mean something to you, I would leave them. I don't like the size of fuzzy pillows, but that is just a personal preference. When I look at your room , I don't even notice window treatments are missing. I really like what you did with the room. I just had a sudden urge to take down all of my curtains.

Your room looks very nice in the daylight....but there does not appear to be lamps? Overhead lighting is very unflattering to people and furnishings. I would remove the chandelier and get something that is semi flush. Then get some tables/lamps or floor lamps.

I like the mix you having going on...I had to go back and forth a couple times to see what it is that is throwing it off for me and it's the white cabinet/hutch..and it's not the actual cabint but the arched tops of the shelves. It looks too countryish to me.

Lovely light fixture but to me it is a bit too formal for the room. I really like the red accent pillows, as I also see bits of red in the room, I would remove the white pillows and replace with a color that is in the fabric of the chair (funny how I can envision accent pillows for your room but cant in my own ). I agree about the top of the cabinets, I think straight across instead of the arch would look much better.

Such a great room. There's some things that bother me about the decor though and I struggle to put my finger on it. I think it's because a lot of it is close, but not quite there. I like the whimsy of the crystal chandy, but not this one as it seems to really need a table underneath. I like the book case, but not the pot on top or the too careful arrangement of items in it. I like the fireplace, but not the viney stuff on it or the way the candlesticks are in a formal symmetrical arrangement yet they are different heights. I'd put the 2 on the right side and get something else for the left. I like the leather sofa, but the fuzzy pillows don't work for me. Definitely need some end tables or sofa table so some lamps can be added for softer lighting in the room.

Also, is it my imagination? Or did the sofa move?

The things I noticed are that the chandy is too formal. The couch is over crowded with pillows. I think I would take the blanket off the chair. Also, I would remove the copper piece that sits above the built ins.

It is a lovely room. I would just tone it down a little.

I would pass on the fuzzy pillows, they give a 60s mod vibe. I like the chandy but it looks to be head-cracking height...?

I moved the copper piece from the top of the bookcase, it does look better. The chandelier is only hanging down 2 loops, and my husband can walk under it. I was thinking ....is there a way to add a not too deep drum shade around the chandelier if I took the loops out? That way the bottom crystals would show?

I could, but then it looks too small. I switched out a couple of things, but I don't know if it appears any more formal. I like the ottoman, but I think it made the room too casual.

Thanks to all your suggestions, I feel it's getting better. The old schoolhouse clock probably has to go (sad because it's a triple chimer) and I do need something below the 2 pics on the right. I had to take two different shots because I can't fit it all in one.

Funky lamp behind the chair pulled in from another room, but I needed something on a decorative table in the corner! Lol! A few more books, and I need a nice vase for the cherry blossom branches.....

I can see the dog now, and like the flower blossoms much better. Not sure I like the funky lamp in the corner now...can it be used by one of the chairs?

Well, now the chandelier seems to look just fine. The room looks a bit more edited and put together. JMO, I'm not a fan of the metal scrolls on your fireplace, especially now with the floral in front. I feel it detracts from the beautiful millwork.

Oh I would SO love to move the tv! It's that hubby thing that keeps me from doing it! :-). He's probably not going to like that I moved that ottoman! The scrolls on the fireplace are easily removed, so I'm going to try that now! Thank you so much everyone!

I have some mission style furniture that my husband likes in another room. That's where the schoolhouse clock will go. :-)

Torreykm----you were absolutely right about the scrollwork on the fireplace.....pic is a little blurry, so it's not showing the dentil, but it looks a lot better on this end!

Overall a huge improvement and you didn't have to spend any money. The different pillows and coffee table, and decluttering the cabinet and fireplace have worked wonders. I applaud you for being so open to suggestions and following through on the ideas that were given. Now the chandelier fits in this elegant room and everything flows together beautifully. The area rug is just perfect.

Would placing the curtain rod even with the top of the cabinet help to balance the two or would that kinda dwarf the fireplace?

Not sure how I am going to do the drapes yet. I have a unique problem in that the small window doesn't have much space on either side, so probably half width panels or a valance that coordinates with the large window? or just leave it bare? Whatever goes in, it will only be to soften the edges, (stationary) because I don't want to cover the windows, only enhance them.

Do you have a pretty view out the window? Do the blinds need to be in the down position most of the time? When the blinds stack, they must take up a lot of the window. I would consider a cellular shade, a roller shade or a decorative pulldown shade instead. I'm not sure you have enough space even for stationary drapes because they'll end up touching the fireplace. Was there ever a window on the other side of the fireplace?

Yes..looking at the room more and more -drapes won't be easy..valance or shade also won't be easy, because there are other windows and doors in close proximity..

I would want something to balance the height of the window with the bookcase a bit. And soften as you said..

I have an idea that you might dislike a lot..I'm not sure I like it myself lol. Just brainstorming. How about hanging something from the top and in the front of this window? something small like a sun catcher, you know they make them from painted glass for example..on a very thin thread?

Just to take your eyes a little bit up when you look at that window-you'll get that visual balance without complicating things with drapes/valances..?

With your changes (which are great btw) I like the chandy you have.

I would leave that window just as it is and also personally would not put anything above it. That will compromise the clean, unfussy look that you have right now.

Is there a window behind the bookcase? If so, I believe the bookcase is the problem causing the room to look unbalanced. If you move the bookcase to another area, I believe the chandelier will then look centered on the room. I think your room is lovely, but does need at least the bookcase change.

To help balance the bookcase, I would put a rod at the same height on the window. Then I would hang just one panel on the left. Like this...

I'm not diggin' that vase in front of the fireplace screen. Do you need that glass topped table between the two chairs or did you just put it there to fill in the space?

Yeah, I don't like the vase either. I was out looking today for something to put the branches in...so far I haven't seen anything. The glass top table was put there because I think something needs to go there (like an end table), but Im looking for something thats sits kind of seat high or lower, and is not very wide. Kitch4me, I like your idea about the window. When I first moved in, I had a problem with that bookcase, too. My son keeps telling me to take it out too. My husband says no. To build another one where the window is would mean opening up the wall to the piano room and expensive so my husband nixed that idea, too. On the upside, the neighborhood is beautiful, and every view from every window in the house is pretty.

The rug makes a huge difference - looks really good. I would not do drapes it will reduce the light in your room. I was going to say that the wall color looks too wishy-washy to me. I think your room would look fantastic in a deep red - same as the sofa pillows, or if you don't like dark colors, neutralize to a warm white. I like green but that shade doesn't go as well with your furnishings and decorating style IMO. That said the rug and other changes have made it very nice, a paint change would be icing on the cake, to me.

My preference would be two single-width (maybe even 1-1/2 width) panels on the fireplace wall window. Stackback would be from 8 to 12 inches/panel, depending on how many widths you use. Just don't use a half-width. It really will look too skimpy. You've got plenty of room on the left and it looks like about 6 inches on the right. And yes, I'd install your rod at the same height as your bookcase. Keep up the great work!

The green on the walls is that RH silver sage, and it makes the chairs look dirty. There isn't a lot of wall space because it's open to the kitchen, and the same color is in there. I haven't painted since I moved in, and I do love color. Trying to keep it light and airy is a problem because of the furniture.....all the trim in the entire house is a sort of winter white.

I really like that one sided drape that Kitch4me posted, except that I would never allow the fabric to cover half the window like that. If I had a pretty view and the sun wasn't coming directly into the room, those blinds would never be down. But that's my preference. The real trick will be finding the correct height for the top of a drape because when you look at the top of the bookcase, then the top of the TV, you probably won't want the top of the drape to be lower... Maybe it should be the same height as the height of the bookcase? So maybe a fixed valence covering some of the wall with a movable drape behind it so that you get the full benefit of that window during the day...

Looking again at the pictures of the room I think I take back any recommendations to do drapes because it would require you to do something on all of the windows and it's so pretty as is, better to leave well enough alone.

I agree, the whole drape thing sounds too fussy, even if there were to be a drape on the big window. The undraped window is close to the undraped French door, and they both look good uncovered. I frankly don't see anything wrong with the wall color either, and it's a lot of work to paint a furnished room.
