I grow Early Italian Purple which is a softneck and it sometimes scapes for me. They were ready to pull with no scapes showing, but during the cure some of the heads have sent out a scape that is just breaking free of the foliage after 3 nearly 4 weeks.

Wow, that's really interesting. I've never heard of such a thing. My Chinese Pink are definitely sending up scapes. I'll probably harvest the scapes this week and the garlic in about two weeks. Might leave one or two scapes on to see if they produce bulbils.

Conversely my Turbans which are supposed to bolt, all except 2, didn't. Cold spells sometimes seem to encourage what normally are softnecks to bolt. That is probably what happened to yours. I think an abnormally hot spell here tripped up my Turbans. I did get nice if relatively small bulbs that seem to be curing just fine. The rest of my hardnecks are still standing tall and nice and green except for some brown tips from that hot spell.

Tom, if you put your hardiness zone (and/or Sunset zone) in your profile that will tell everybody a general area you are growing in. That makes a difference in variety performance among other things.
