I don't know if everyone in the state is swarmed with ladybugs but we are. We have them crawling all over us, in my purse...you name it. Today I moved a hand tool on my garden bench and here's what was under it. If they bring good luck, I'm the luckiest girl alive lol

I love them too. They eat so many pests and this help allows us to skip using pesticides. I just happen to think they are cute, too, and love having them around.

It is a really good lady bug year. I expect one reason we all have so many is that the mild winter wasn't as hard on them as winter usually is. Seeing a lady bug hard at work in the garden is a reason to smile. With all the lady bugs we have around this year, we should be smiling all the time.

Today while harvesting corn in the back garden, I found a whole lot of red ladybugs. Bright red, not orangey-red. They were so cute and were running all over the corn silks and leaves looking for something to eat. In the front garden, we've mostly had just the standard orange ones and a few orange-red ones and a couple of pink ones. I wanted to stand and just watch them because their color was so pretty, but there was thunder approaching from our west, and I needed to hurry and harvest the corn and get indoors before the lightning and rain arrived (which I did).

I used to be really bad about staying out in the garden until lightning got too close for comfort, but after listening to Dr. Forbes on The Weather Channel say "when thunder roars, go indoors" for years and years, I have reformed my ways and now try to get indoors ASAP when I start hearing thunder.

We're not seeing a whole lot of lady bugs here (central OK) this year. Mixed feelings about it. We've had 2-3 years out of the last 10-15 that were absolutely swarming with lady bugs to the point you couldn't keep them out of anything. They stank terribly if hit with a vacuum.

Seems like I'd read then that those were a different strain of lady bugs, or fake lady bugs or something. For a garden forum though, lady bugs have got to be popular.

I have only seen one ladybug on my plants this year. I tried to pick it up off my cilantro plant, which had already started to flower and was basically useless to me, to put it on one of the aphid infested pepper plants, but I dropped it and was unable to find it after that. I have yet to see another lady bug, but luckily I haven't had too many pest problems this year (knocks on wood).

It is the non-native Asian ladybugs that want to come inside the house to overwinter. The native ones know how to hibernate here without forcing their way inside.

I'm surprised you aren't seeing them in central OK. They are all over the place down here. A lack of ladybugs may be why so many people in central OK are having so much trouble with aphids, white flies, and the like.

Well then, something they really, really love to eat is on the flowers, and that's not unusual. They follow the food. If they gobble up all the available food, they move on to a new area, which is why it often appears they have disappeared. However, when some sort of new pest they like to eat pops up, they return to eat it. I don't know how they know when and where the pests are, but I've watched them for enough years to know how vigorously they follow the food no matter where it goes.

Green lacewings are similar. When you have some pest insect around that they like to eat, you'll have green lacewings everywhere. Then they'll disappear and you'll wonder what happened. It is the same thing---they are following the food.
