Orchard Grass

last modified: 10 years ago

I live in NW Missouri just under a 2 acre lot. I feel like I'm wasting money and I need advice from someone not looking to make a profit.

I bought this house just over a year ago. The house was new and build on previous grazing land. The grading was poor and there was hardly any grass. I paid a company to regrade and hydroseed. The hydroseed didn't take and weeds came up in bunches. They did the right thing by coming back in the Fall and seeded (not hydroseed) the entire area that was previously hydroseeded. Everything looked pretty good late Fall but I needed to spot seed a few areas.

This Spring I started having orchard grass pop up everywhere. Like it was thrown all over the yard where they had seeded.

I'm not sure if the Orchard grass was in their seed or if it's blown from adjoining open fields. I think it came from their seed because the areas they didn't touch in the very back part of the lot still looks good.

I'm about 6k in right now and my yard looks like hell.

I've done fertilizer in the winter, 2 rounds of prevent and weed and feed so far this year.

The local nursery said to keep it mowed short so it doesn't go to seed even though I have prevent down.

Said to core aerate and over seed this fall.

My concern is this orchard grass cannot be killed without killing everything all over again as it's so wide spread. Will all the money spent on seed this fall just get choked out? Or can i throw down enough seed it will take over the Orchard grass? I'm planning on a fescue rye bluegrass mixture.
